Vitamin C: A Powerhouse for Your Health and Why More Is Crucial to Survival in Current Times

A Brief History of Vitamin C

Historically, thousands of years BCE, healers from different cultures including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Italy, Greece and Asia were all working intuitively via natural means to procure health. Despite the lack of technology of the past few centuries, humans were able to discern the need for plants to keep their health vibrant.

In 400 BCE, Hippocrates knew that plants were to be used to combat the signs of what we know now as vitamin C deficiency or scurvy. In the 16th century Native Americans knew to heal the visiting explorers who were afflicted with scurvy using the bark of a tree. As a result of hundreds of sailors developing scurvy with vitamin C deficiencies in the 16th through the 19th centuries, the use of lemon and lime juices were added to the diets on the sailing ships, thanks to Dr. James Lind, a British naval surgeon (1747).

The word “vitamine” was not coined until 1912 by a Polish biochemist Casimir Funk referring to an organic (composed of living matter) compound that is essential to human biological function. It was discovered that humans (guinea pigs, bats, and primates as well) could not self-manufacture these substances and therefore are considered essential in their diets. In 1930 vitamin C – the scurvy-fighting wonder – was isolated from lemons and named by chemist Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi.

The Significance of Vitamin C

Dr. Linus Pauling – another scientific giant of this time – further proved the significance of vitamin C (aka ascorbic acid). Dr. Pauling validated that this vitamin had even more properties that are extremely valuable for immunological fortification and defense of the body. His work revealed how higher levels of vitamin C were instrumental in slowing the ravages of AIDS, cancer, common cold, and other viruses. The vitamin serves as an antioxidant and an enzyme cofactor, both of which are necessary actions to stimulate white blood cells to release substances like peroxynitrite, superoxide dismutase, and cytokines to clean up free radicals and microbial invasions. Interestingly, the human cellular glucose transporter, Glut-1, will accept both glucose and ascorbic acid- with a higher affinity for glucose- but when there is a viral or microbial insult, ascorbic acid will be readily absorbed to defend the body. A life-saver for sure!

When we talk of vitamin C, the letter “C” stands for collagen or citrus, and the former requires the latter for its production in the body. Collagen is a major structural protein found in skin and other connective tissues. Citrus is a subcategory of fruit that includes lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, citron, kumquat, and many more around the world. Vitamin C is also found in significant amounts in coriander, paprika, green chili pepper, guava, papaya, sauerkraut, bell peppers, strawberries, cantaloupe, kiwi fruit, potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli and all members of the Brassica family. It is not found in most meat and the little that does exist in raw liver, dairy milk, roe, and eggs is not recommended by this author.

Vitamin C in our Everyday Lives

Vitamin C must be taken daily in the diet via whole food through the digestive tract for the maintenance, growth and repair of skin, gut, bones, teeth, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, spinal discs as well as for the prevention of a myriad of diseases. In other words, our bodies cannot heal or survive without this nutrient.

What are the signs and symptoms of vitamin C deficiency? If you are experiencing fatigue (increasing lack of energy and tired) unrelated to a sleep deficit, unexplained easy bruising, purple spots on the skin, high blood pressure, bleeding gums, loosened teeth, joint pain, anemia, mood swings, memory or mental decline, muscle aches and recurrent infections with high susceptibility to infections, you may very well be lacking this essential nutrient.

Vitamin C repletion is critical, very safe, and has little or no side effects.

For those who are unaware, the US RDA (recommended daily allowance) for vitamin C is 75mg for non-smoking adult ladies and 90mg for men. This was found as a result of studies many years ago involving prevention of scurvy and very basic functions. These amounts – in this author’s viewpoint – are quite insufficient for full defense and protection of the body. There are many reasons for this. For instance, when the body is afflicted with a virus, the use of several grams of supplemental ascorbic acid has been shown in a number of studies to slow or blunt the course of an illness. Inflammation in heart disease or autoimmune disorders can cause oxidative stress and release of free radicals leading to vitamin C depletion.

Heavy metal exposure can also deplete vitamin C. Medications like oral contraceptives, anti-hypertensives, antacids, barbiturates, anti-anxiety meds, antibiotics, steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen, meloxicam, and aspirin can cause considerable vitamin C (and other nutrient) deficiencies. Smoking depletes vitamin C.

In all the above mentioned, vitamin C repletion is critical. And, it is very safe with little or no side effects. Unfortunately, the average unsuspecting person is completely unaware of any of this information because it is generally not discussed in medical arenas or endorsed as an effective treatment. If one is concerned that she/he may be experiencing a deficiency condition, a health care professional should be consulted.

Nutritional Vitamin IV Therapy

If higher doses are needed and cannot be readily accomplished with oral intake, another route of administration is parenteral, i.e. via intravenous infusion. This is done with a physician or licensed professional who is trained to use infusion therapy. The vitamin would be prescribed as part of a health and wellness program. The higher amount or dose of the vitamin serves to boost immunity as well as help remove excess toxic metals from the body such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic. It can also remove excess calcium that may be accumulating in sites other than the bones such as arteries, gallbladder, kidneys, and gut. Other agents such as EDTA are also used in chelating (removing) heavy metal buildup in the body.

In these disturbing times, it is important to know what you can do to help protect and preserve your health and those you love. Vitamin fortification is a safe, fairly easy and healthful approach. Infusions are done in a comfortable, inviting atmosphere surrounding by nature at the WellCome OM Integral Healing and Education Center in Spring Hill.

Simply Sensible and Gentle Defense

As we all attempt to recreate our life schedules and decide how to interact with our families, co-workers, neighbors, and friends with this ‘viral menace’, the need for self-care and preservation is glaring at us. A sensible gentle defense of what we have and its meaningfulness is needed. It cannot be ignored.
Now, there are many helpful actions that can be very useful with positive lasting effects for everyone. And, while you are distancing now, you will want to take this opportunity to set out with a plan for self-improvement. If you are uncertain or confused about how to proceed, stop for a few minutes and answer the following questions:

  • How do I feel?
  • Am I breathing fully and comfortably?
  • Is my heart beating regularly and smoothly?
  • Am I eating/drinking healthfully? Consciously?
  • Am I exercising for daily fitness? Outside in sun?
  • Am I taking time away from cell phones and computers?
  • Do I sleep restfully?
  • Do I take time to meditate?
  • Am I working and/or playing productively?
  • Do I socialize with good relations?
  • Am I engaged in loving relationships?
  • Do I express respect and gratitude to family, friends, co-workers, ancestors, foes, trees, plants, animals, mountains, waters, sun, moon and galaxy?
  • Do I help those who are in need?
  • Am I taking care of the environment inside and outside the body?

Looking at each one…

Feelings may be shifting, and it is important to recognize and express them in healthy ways. Have a dialogue with one or a small group to openly discuss the sentiments and how you can help one another in difficult moments.

Sit upright with back straight and hands gently placed palms upward on your thighs. Breathe calmly, slowly with longer exhalations than inhalations. Focus on the end of the full breath before exhalation briefly. Let bad thoughts fall away. A powerful moment! This is cleansing and de-stressing. Try this for at least 3 minutes. Repeat at different times of the day- every day.

Place two fingers on the palm/thumb-side of your wrist and check your pulse as you sit or stand. Be familiar with that pulsation that reflects the heart pumping life’s blood through your arteries. Be thankful for its indefatigability to keep you going for a very long time! The heart needs exercise so get moving!

Chew a meal of quality nutriment that is worth the time and effort. Junk food and senseless indulgences will lead to illness. Your immune system cannot defend the body well without proper nutrition. A healthy dose of oral Vitamin C can be taken up to 3000 mg daily. Take a good multivitamin/mineral with iodine daily (check with your health provider if you have questions on this) elderberry is a nice source of Vitamin A that is important for mucous membranes of nasal, throat, trachea and gut passages. A quality probiotic is very important, especially if you have taken antibiotics. Seek further guidance from nutritionist or one skilled in this area. Don’t forget to also feed your dog or cat quality food too.

Take a power walk, jog, swim, bounce, ride, play, dance, stretch, do yoga or partake in another form of movement that invigorates the body and mind. Start slowly and work your way up if just beginning. Fifteen minutes twice a day works well. Go outside for the best form of Vitamin D – just 20 minutes will allow the liver to form about 25,000 iu of this vitamin. Immune defense requires Vitamin D. Make these motions a habit.

Turn off the cell phone or put in airplane mode when you are not using it to reduce exposure to electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) that can impact your immune system, nervous system or entire body function. Take breaks from the computer. Use a succulent or other plant, a water feature or Shungite stone around the devices you use at a desk to also help absorb the EMFs. Avoid holding devices close to the body and especially head. Children and pregnant ladies must be protected even more!

To sleep well you must be active (see above), get some sun rays (once again, 20 minutes without sunscreen to provide healthful production of Vitamin D), relax and eat at proper hours. Consume your last meal of day 2-3 hours before bed. Turn off cellular/computer devices a good hour or more before sleep to reduce the stimulating effects. Slumber has its requirements and our bodies require slumber for every organ system to work strong and well.
Meditate mindfully in a calm and quiet position. Take the breaths as discussed above and let everything go with your eyes closed. Nothing matters but for the moment you are here taking breaths in and out, one after another. Try this for at least 5 minutes and take as much time that you need for a better day and night. Chant if you wish or simply breathe. Repeat often.

Work, create, design, compose and recreate with a sense of meaning and fulfillment. Do that which makes you feel joy on your own or with a companion. It is up to you.

Yes, we all need each other. Solitude is good but more times than not- and especially now- we all need a buddy, be it a human, fish, plant or animal. Do not disconnect. Natural personal touch is crucial to the health of everyone. Allow yourself to love and be loved.

Let gratitude be part of your daily life. Remember those who gave life to you, came before you, nurtured and guided you. Give back to them and to the cause for a better world. Remember that we are all part of the universe that extends backward and forward. Help those who need assistance including children, the infirmed, animals, veterans of war, elders and whoever is calling for a hand or heart. Join a community garden, plant a tree or crop. Volunteer for others. It all can be done safely.

With all the admonition about hand cleansing, take care of the environment within and outside the body by using natural soaps and cleansers. Use ‘simple’ soaps without harsh chemicals, dyes or colognes. Leave your shoes at the front hall or door before entering your home to avoid tracking in chemicals and debris from outside that may be hazardous. Have a ‘home shoe’ ready. Pets need non-toxic cleaning as well. Please be much more conscious as you are washing your hands face, clothes, home and all where you work or dwell!

A sensible approach to caring and protecting yourself and the world around you will have long-lasting positive effects.

Health, peace, harmony, and joy be with you always.

Unify, Fortify and Transform

multiple hands forming a heart in unity

May I take this opportunity to express a world of gratitude to you all who have sacrificed for the sake of all humanity. Bravery and the drive to bring peace and harmony to a disturbed world is where you have gone and it is truly a massive feat for commendation.

If there is one motto to live by, this may be it: unify, fortify and transform.

The absolute connection cannot be denied or violated. The health and proliferation of humanity is fully associated with human decisions. The problems come when there is a breakdown and distortion in the communication between humans and the powerful energies of this world.

At this very moment in time- as has happened many times ago both recently and remotely- there is a reverberating lesson and message that we are to take better care and respect our environment both outward and inwardly for the sustenance of this magnificent planet.

We must all face an ever-present fact: we are responsible and accountable for each other and all that we come from.

To paraphrase the keen 16th-century scholar & poet, John Donne:

‘No one stands alone…each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main’

As we are faced with this latest novel viral “attack” in our midst, let us be reminded that the root cause of this apparent catastrophe flows through our very own processes, decisions, movements and so it has manifest itself.

We are repeatedly being messaged by Nature to collectively pull together- as we ironically pull apart- to improve how we live and make harmony and peace return as it should in the great wisdom of this universe.

The “virus” is part of the transformation that we are all experiencing. Call it a strange blessing or another strong lesson, it must be recognized and respected. Coronavirus- named for its “crown” of studs that surround its capsule or outer coat- is not a new virus. It is a variant strain from a larger family known as coronaviridae. It is a mutated form as far as we have been able to understand its composition.

The virus has moved from animal to human through the ages. The ‘usual’ state of the virus is not generally a cause for any harm to anyone, however, if given the opportunity to push through the immune barrier of the human body, it can violate membranes and cause some mild cold or even flu-like symptoms. Any pre-existing serious immune issues in a person’s may cause even more trouble. And, it is the combination of many factors in our daily living habits and decisions that are probable causes for the novel strain to have developed and taken a stronghold on many lives.

However, we shall not fear. We shall become more aware and take better care to help all and especially our children.

Important concepts to ponder are that our ecological/biological systems are not meant to be intoxicated, poisoned and disregarded for the sake of greed, profit or control. Our food, water, air, earth and dwellings are to be pure as possible and respected to the beat of our ability. They will otherwise collapse. Let us be fully conscious of this.

Here and now may we unify, fortify and transform.

In closing, I will tap the wisdom of a Native American proverb:
Love yourself; get outside yourself and take action; focus on the solution. Be at peace.

In health always,

Dr. Maria Scunziano-Singh, MD, NMD

Avert Disease: Re-balance the Imbalance

The human body is a powerhouse of energy with a keenly orchestrated system of checks and balances to sustain it. At every fraction of time, there are forces– call them deific or divine- that protect the living body from utter ruination. In the world of science, this process is recognized as an exquisite evolutionary step that has its origins in the earliest and simplest forms of life. Adaptation to natural challenging elements, i.e. extreme temperatures, predation, etc., of early life forms to actually change their bodies. Eventually, higher sea and land plants and animals also had to transform in order to survive. Heavier fur, thicker skins, sharper eyesight, stronger leaves or roots, and noxious scents- or even seductive ones- all evolved, accordingly, for the innumerable species on this planet.

Our modern world is inundated by prodigious and diverse newer invisible and visible energy sources such as microwaves, cellular technology, x-rays (along with our ancient sun), microbes, artificial processed foods, drugs, and chemicals. In order to protect all that the body is exposed to vis-à-vis these energies –or any energy, the human body automatically enlists intelligent lines of defense with the immune system as its primary guardian. The latter is wholly integrated with every cell of human tissue to come to the rescue when the needs arise- and they do on a constant basis. Any insult or disturbance in an organ or group of cells in a body cavity will instantaneously signal for a defense mechanism to be mobilized to protect and repair the mishap. Other systems that are to be fully acknowledged for their role in the defense department include the skin, liver, adrenal glands and the large intestine. These organs have a complex coordination of their own detoxifying and/or reparative mechanisms along with immune cell activity that conducts according to any given specific need.

(special note: the impact of constant waves of electromagnetic energies, especially from cell phones, is a subject all unto itself. Educators should closely examine this issue and urgently act to protect our children who are the future leaders in this world.)

So, the problem is…the human body defenses can and will be overwhelmed by the distortive nature of many of these energies. Gleaning from the timeless principles of macrobiotics, a series of biological changes emerge when there is a state of imbalance.

Let’s look at how the stages of imbalance in the human body can instigate the onset of disease.

Stage 1: Generalized Fatigue

Normally, the body will discharge waste and toxins via breathing, perspiring, urinating and defecating. Physical and mental work with ideas, creativity, other gentle and loving expressions including intimacy are all forms of energy discharge. A natural feeling of sleepiness arises at the end of a day. All immune/defense functions will preserve and maintain good order of mind and body.
However, if there is exposure of excess food or other energies (often accompanied by deficiencies of quality enzymes, vitamins and minerals), abnormal dispersal will manifest as headaches, dizziness, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, wheezing, excessive perspiration, frequent urination and irregular bowel habits. Other discharges like anxiety, tremors, shouting in anger and mental fogginess can occur as well. As days, weeks and months continue with these symptoms, generalized fatigue will arise. Unless corrected by proper diet, lifestyle and removal of other toxic exposures, immune defenses are heightened and constantly stressed. As a result, the fatigue will persist as a feeling of endless need for rest or sleep that ultimately will lead to the second stage of disease formation.

Stage 2: Aches and Pains

Muscle aches, headaches, cramps, gastrointestinal disturbances/pains, palpitations, worry, increasing anxiety, tremors, numbness and tingling are all added issues that can develop in this next stage. With continued exposures to various forms of radiation, processed meats, milk, sugar, artificial foods, drugs and other toxic environmental chemicals these problems are inevitable. Sudden accidental falls or injuries can manifest as distorted energies in and around the body. Proper guidance with removal and correction of the imbalances can prevent the next stage from developing.

Stage 3: Changes in Blood and Lymph Quality

If the above stages are not addressed, the blood and lymph will be overwhelmed and problems like skin eruptions, abscesses and skin cancers can develop. Infections can begin easily in eyes, mouth, respiratory tract, ears, bladder or other area. Depression and mood swings are seen, lack of productivity and loss of life direction are often noted at this stage of imbalance. Detoxification on many levels is necessary for one to halt the progression to more complicated conditions. At this stage you are advised to begin working with a health provider trained to recognize how these problems are managed with good preventive practices.

Stage 4: Accumulation

Sinus congestion, inflammation and pain are common at this stage with lack of corrective methods in stage 3. Pain and infection in the body cavities mentioned above occur with increasing frequency and intensity. Lungs can become heavy with congestion and pneumonia can develop. Breast cysts, lumps and prostate enlargement in men are common at this stage. Excess use of dairy, meat, oils, sugar, icy foods and drinks, chemicals in food and home/garden/workplace, various drugs, inhalants and other debris, electromagnetic exposure from cellular devices with wi-fi (many hours and close to body) all are contributing elements to the deteriorating condition of stage 4. It is imperative that one changes many aspects of one’s lifestyle for a chance of rebalance. Consult with a holistic or integral provider is highly recommended.

Stage 5: Storage

It is important to truly change a chronically imbalanced lifestyle to avoid reaching this stage of increasing biological disturbances. Here is where there is significant hardening of tissues such that we see abnormalities in heart, liver, gallbladder, intestinal, and endocrine systems. Ultimately, cancer develops. The help of a holistic practitioner is recommended to help restore the body back to balance in the most gentle and unobtrusive means. Conventional physicians will generally add medications and order various studies and procedures for the conditions that can be severe.

Stage 6: Neurological Disorders

From a macrobiotic perspective, this is a deeper deterioration of the transmission of nerve impulses- also known as chi or life flow-throughout the body generated by chronic imbalance. Mental depression, organ and system disturbances become even more pronounced. Joints, muscles and most bodily functions are impaired to the point of significant disability. Diseases we label such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and dementia manifest in this later stage. With a proper healing approach, it can take several months or years to ameliorate or seriously change the course of these conditions. One can persevere with determination and will to be well.

Stage 7: Self-Justification and Arrogance

This stage is one that none should ever enter. A time of detachment from nature and virtually the meaning of life, the moment of arrogance is a truly sad one. It is what starts and ends the whole disease process. Years of selfish disrespect and carelessness of the natural order of the universe leads to breakdown of the universe within the body. This reverberates to the world around and about the body. You see, the body is a microcosm of the macrocosmic world. If the mind has decided to violate and distort the body, it has done the same to the universe.

The goal here is to recognize that it takes conscious change to reduce or eliminate disease processes and ultimately heal the ailing body.

If you are not feeling well or know that something is not right, take the time to help your body restore balance. Seek the counsel and services of health providers who can help you redirect your life that may be on a downward spiral. Those who have the knowledge and training in a “wholistic” and/or integrative approach to health and healing, are recommended. It is best to find the path to wellness in the most logical, gentlest and harmonious ways. Do the best you can if you want the best outcome.

You are urged to act now- not later– and look at how you are truly living. How are you treating your body- your living matter? And, what you do impacts the entire world. Simply ask yourself: how much does it matter to be in peace and harmony with all of life?

Rebalance the imbalance. It is time.

Thank you,
Dr. Maria Scunziano-Singh

Message on Higher Consciousness from the Founder of WellCome OM

people meditating

Our history is where the lessons all are…

Unconscious choices are forcing us to awaken and change now.

Life begs for higher awareness. Our global misconduct with our natural world is resurfacing as we, yet again, face the power of the invisible world of both EMFs and viruses over our human physiological defenses. Our immune systems are challenged every moment as we struggle to prevent or suppress illness. But are we preventing anything??

As the current “novel” strain of coronavirus is causing a stir (bats and pangolins in China have been considered among the key sources), we need to look more closely at why these outbreaks are happening.

Truth be told, we have been preoccupied with technologically and, may I say, carelessly in our life habits. Since the First World War, we have seen the escalation of massive viral surges in many areas of the world. These eruptions are (very interestingly) coinciding with significant electromagnetic additions to the planet. Note the introduction of massive EM forces in the defense and communications industries right along with bombardments of chemicals into the environments (DDT, glyphosate and other organophosphate materials in agriculture). Moreover, there has been a tremendous explosion of new drugs, alcohol, artificial foods, endless beverage selections and other human practices that are all collectively creating a cryptic soup, the likes of which we are consuming on a regular basis. (This is not soup that I want to take in and hopefully you agree). We have pushed the proverbial needle way too far – literally…

Here is a reminder of all those pandemics and epidemics that came into our lives commencing about 100 years ago:

  • The Spanish Flu – (avian source implicated) in 1918 after soldiers returned home from war in many countries including Ireland, France and the US.
  • Swine flu, H1N1 – (began as human to pig transmission and pigs were implicated) of 2009 and considered a new version of the Spanish Flu of 1918
  • H5N1 – (avian/poultry implicated as source in Asia) since 2003
  • HIV/AIDS – primate source implicated in the 1920s with full re-emergence in humans in 1983 particularly in Congo, US and globally eventually.
  • Influenza A – (avian source implicated) known for more than a century with mutations continuous
  • SARS-CoV-1 – (implicated source-civet animal) sold as meat in China in 2002
  • Ebola – originating in Congo (fruit bats and monkeys implicated) detected in 2014
  • Zika – (mosquito considered cause) originating in Brazil in 2016. Babies are born with microcephaly (small brains that cannot survive)

And the list goes on (within and around these mentioned above) that involves other countries worldwide. Only now suddenly it appears that because of the new virus in the air many people have a heightened awareness of the upsurge the multiple viral infections over the past 100 years.

Why have we not been more conscious? In general, people are easily seduced by convenience, speed, ease of use and what “they cannot see”. The fact is, however, that we are heading further into a particularly dangerous state of global health. A reminder to all is that we are exploiting animals, birds and the entire ecosystem to the point of vast human suffering. A big concern – if not the essential key – is the technological disruption of the natural energy fields on the planet. The massive human-directed electromagnetic forces (EMFs) that are part of the cellular world have enveloped our planet and are affecting the cosmos around it. We have never experienced this prior to the past century. In all this, we just happen to be seeing a universal transmission of novel viral strains that are emerging more and more. As humans assume increasing control over creatures and their habitats, the viruses are going to mutate and rapidly replicate for their survival. Viruses are technically “non-living” and must inhabit living creatures for their own permanency. These simple structures composed of genetics with a coating surrounding them) can undergo both intraspecies (within a group) and interspecies (between groups of species) transmission. The result is massive imbalances in the ecosystem and ultimately in our environments where we dwell, including the very bodies we live in!

Preventive strategies are important now more than ever in order for our nation and the world to keep well and life sustained. Let us make a dent in the viral issue with sensibility and better lifestyles.

Let us all reflect and act now to change the way we are conducting our lives.

Here are important sustainable moves everyone should make now:

  • Be calm and step back for a time to look at how you are living. Have you been treating your body and outer environment well?
  • Breathe slowly and exhale fully several times throughout your day in a peaceful posture wherever you may be – practice often!
  • Cultivate organic gardens and consume the plants as the majority of your food intake; eat clean natural foods only
  • Take poultry and meat out of the diet more often and consider removing them with a proper balance of protein, fat and carbs from plant and some seafood sources
  • Cook at home and eat with your loved ones
  • Exercise outdoors daily and get a good dose of sunlight for best health; spend more time with nature and less with artificial settings and devices
  • Avoid smoke, fumes and toxic air in general; use essential oils for diffusing/applying in home and office settings to clean the air and enhance your immunity and well-being.
  • Be with loved ones and friends – socialize in healthy settings outside and inside health-promoting indoor venues. Keep your distance for now but do not avoid being with others!
  • Help in any way you can to make life better for the planet
  • Work productively and safely in any environment respecting everyone’s personal space
  • Use natural stones like tourmaline, jasper, hematite and shungite along with plants and water features in and around your areas of computer devices. Turn off Wi-Fi and use only if absolutely needed. Hard wire (plug in) devices and less Wi-Fi use is recommended!
  • Use blue light blocking eyewear if you are working later in the evening on computer devices. This can help improve your sleep.
  • Stay clean and practice good hygiene without artificial chemicals used on the body or on the environment outside of the body (your home, garden, workplace, etc.)
  • Sleep soundly through the night after a good day of conscious living. Again, keep all devices turned off and especially away from your heads at night.

Preventive strategies are important now more than ever in order for our nation and the world to keep well and life sustained. Let us make a dent in the viral issue with sensibility and better lifestyles please. Put down or turn off the devices more often and turn off Wi-Fi when not in use (put in airplane mode) – cannot emphasize this enough! Remember that our children are all participating and they need us to be more aware and conscious of our actions.

We are all in this together, my friends.

Health to you all,
Dr. M

Wellness…Not Illness

The road to well is paved with the goodness of the Earth…

What is wellness? A state of complete uninhibited flow of energy throughout the body and all its layers allowing for peace and balance of every organ system. Happiness manifests.

Illness? A condition of blockage of the vital energy flow in and through body channels/layers that reduces its integrity and functionality. Distress prevails.

I see our planet as a cosmic gift that the human race has been assigned to embrace, respect and sustain. Every element within and surrounding the Earth’s energetic field has been spectacularly organized with infinite cyclical patterns. The dawn and dusk of each day, the ebb and flow of the tides, the seasons of the year and the birth and transition of all of life forms are some of the wondrous rhythms that we all know and admire. And yet, we all seek to know what mystical omnipotence has designed such precise sequences. Ahh, the mystery of life!

There are the added features to this massive universe that I consider very special micro planets that follow these macro planetary/cosmic rhythms. Humans (animals, plants and other life forms) are these micro planets.

We inhale and exhale, ingest and digest and reproduce our environments. We are natural extensions or micro-units of the whole parent planet Earth.

Yes, we are integral bodies of and within a very large body.

The natural robust health of human bodies is correlated with the rhythmic patterns of nature. As we literally reflect the macrocosm, all of our functions flow in sync with nature. When we eat, exercise, work, play, socialize and sleep in the name of love for our entire planet, there is sustained wellness. Any and all deviations from purity of heart and spirit for our macro-micro planets can and will change the course of wellness to illness.

Whole food – cultivated and harvested with respect, natural nutrients and prepared lovingly by gentle, careful cooking (avoid microwaves, icy cold foods, smoked, deep-fried and high heat grills) – is critical for the path to total health. Another vitally important point is that whole food is to be chewed thoroughly and without haste for overall complete digestion. Timing of 2-3 meals between 8 am and 6 pm to satisfy body energy needs is a good schedule to maintain. Avoid late or very early eating. Anything less than conscious, nutritious eating has no value to the health and wellbeing of a person (or any living creature) and should be avoided for prevention of illness and optimal living.

In temperate climates, land and sea plant-based foods with added seafood (namely, fish with scales) are optimal for their overall healthful value. The same is said for tropical and subtropical climates. Very cold climates, however, may also see the use of sustainable and consciously sacrificed animal or seafood. These denser proteinaceous foods are added to the available land plants for increased energy needs of the human body in continuous frigid temperatures.

Fitness by various forms of exercise is essential for heart, brain, nerve, hormone, digestive and immune competency. Bodyweight should be in a normal range for height and age, proportional and without burden to the spine and joints. Performing invigorating movements outdoors and in the sun is key to setting the body up for proper sleep-wake cycling (melatonin formation happens with sunlight exposure and lack of sun can negatively affect sleep). Productive and gainful work, blissful play with friends, family and pets or creative activities that fulfill the spirit complete the human connectivity. The palpable personal interaction rather than the “virtual” one is strongly recommended for optimal harmony and reduced risk by artificial electromagnetic frequencies. Moreover, the release of happy-inducing biochemicals such as oxytocin and endorphins (natural pain relievers) with human-to-human/animal presence cannot be understated.

Ultimately, there is a primal need for sleep. This is equally important to that of nourishment and recreation. We cannot be well and in balance without this crucial posture at night. Sleep is very powerful in its effects to restore energy, repair and regenerate weakened or worn tissues and cells, help keep appetite under control and strengthen immune function. A 7-8 hour night sleep will only be attained if daily living is energetic (including sun exposure) with basic habits as mentioned above.

It is in your best living choices that will allow for a natural harmony of the macro and micro planets.

Choose wellness-not illness, for the sake of peace, balance, and happiness in this universe.

In health and wellness,

Dr. Maria Scunziano-Singh, MD, NMD

Love Nothing Less Than Completely: Start With Your Heart To Take Away The Pain

man crying over broken heart

Life can be unpredictable. Life can be hard. There may have been times in your life where it feels like you have lost love for yourself, and even for others. This loss of love can be the result of circumstances out of your control or painful. Even when pain is emotional, it can sometimes manifest as physical pain or ailments in the body.

Opening the mind/body channels within yourself and allowing your loving energies to flow within you, especially during these times, can lead to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

The Heart’s Place in Love

Although it appears that the home of loving feelings reside within and around the chambers of an organ we call the heart — which churns and massages every cell in our body, leading all to cycle on a continuous path of endless love — we choose to designate the heart as a sacred place for the strongest emotion. The absoluteness of this emotion we call love is undefinable and essentially boundless, without beginning or end.

The Brain’s Place in Love

Love is without form, just like the mind. It appears that the mind resides in the organ we call the brain, which contains 100 billion neurons that govern all of our body functions to form memories, secret neurochemicals, and send impulses to the heart. The mind, however, is formless as it carries our thoughts in virtually every direction, in and outside of every cell and bit of matter, and it can seemingly steer you away from love. But it never truly pulls you from it.

Roadblocks to Love

People have the ability to love, but they are often thrown off balance by a disturbance of the mental process. These roadblocks can be caused by things such as stress due to loss, mental or physical abuse, depression, rejection, or a marital or relationship breakup.

Each of these examples can have severe implications for your well being and can even cause virtual “heartbreak.” And this heartbreak can lead to health issues. In fact, research shows that pain from heartbreaks can manifest in similar ways as physical pain.

One study tested individuals who recently went through a breakup experience. Researchers showed participants photos of their loved ones and subsequently measured their brain activity. Interestingly, these participants showed brain activity similar to that which occurs when one experiences physical pain. These findings led researchers to conclude that rejection, and emotional and physical pain are all processed in the same regions of the brain.

But rest assured this heartbreak is not insurmountable. If you or someone you know has suffered as a result of these types of roadblocks, there is always a way to find the seemingly “lost love” for oneself and others. That way is through self-awareness.

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”
— Oscar Wilde

Gaining Self-Awareness

Because health is your greatest wealth, and many people don’t pay enough attention to things until problems arise, self-awareness is key to keeping both your heart and your physical self healthy and happy.

Granted, this can be easier said than done, especially during these major roadblocks in life, but you have the strength and ability within your being to do this. Self-awareness is all about finding love within yourself that can emerge beyond the “borders” of the skin.

To begin to be self-aware, you must be willing to accept that:

  • Love is truth
  • All of nature is an expression of love
  • Love remains a mystery to science
  • Love and hate are not opposite
  • Self-love is key to health
  • Love is infinite and part of everything
  • Nothing can take love away

To cultivate self-awareness, you need to have mindfulness. Mindfulness is the key to overcoming suffering and recognizing natural wisdom — both our own and others’.

An exercise that can help you to become more self-aware is “mindful meditation.”

feelings stream graphic

Mindful Meditation

Mindfulness can be nurtured through meditation, just as it is done in the Buddhist tradition. There are many different kinds of meditation. Some types of meditation are designed to help us relax, and others are meant to produce altered states of consciousness. However, mindful meditation is unique in that it is designed to help us become more unconditionally present. This means we are present with whatever is currently happening in our lives, no matter what it is.

Because it allows us to be more present in our own lives, it gives us glimpses of our inherent wisdom. It teaches us how to stop perpetuating the unnecessary suffering that results from trying to escape the discomfort, and even pain, we are experiencing in our lives. When we are mindful, we show up for our lives.

This mindfulness can awaken and nurture that love you have always had, even if you feel like you lost it along the way. Practicing this type of meditation exercise can reap the following benefits to your body to help keep you whole and content with your life:

  • Body relaxation
  • Focus and clarity in the mind
  • Detoxification of negative energy
  • Centering
  • Opening blocked channels

You should take a few minutes of each day to mindfully meditate and it takes nothing more than:

  • 5-10 minutes (more if you like)
  • A comfortable posture
  • A comfortable environment, at home or elsewhere
  • Focusing on your breathing
  • Allowing your body to let go

Doing this type of meditation can literally open a channel to and from the heart, which can be the difference that you have wanted in your life.

Starting A Journey to Love Through Self-Care

All that is present to you, by you and with you, is there from love. And your heart is where you feel the power and passion for living. Now is the time to take care of this magnificent pump that generates the life flow for you.

To start a journey back to becoming the loving and loved person that you are, you need to remember the following:

  • Be mindful of your place in the universe.
  • Have some recollection of your birth — you were meant to be.
  • Know that your heart began just as the brain was forming as your first organs.
  • Remember that your mother nurtured you.
  • Give gratitude to all of your ancestors, family, and friends.
  • Give gratitude to the planet and the food it provides to sustain you.
  • Take only the healthiest of nutrition for your body — your heart and other organs should not be fed junk food!
  • Exercise well each day and sleep soundly at night.
  • Practice mindful meditation often.
  • Reconnect with life.

Always remember that you are loved, you matter, and you are worthy!

Diets Don’t Work!

bowls of fresh fruit

As we enter a new year, we make those same old New Year’s resolutions we make every year — to lose weight and go on a diet. But, unfortunately, these health and wellness resolutions are generally highly restrictive and unsustainable. This unsustainability is why so many people keep making the same resolutions year after year.

It’s time to face the facts, “diets” don’t work! So, maybe it’s time to have a discussion on implementing a plan that will help keep you at a proper weight and healthy for life.

What Does DIET Mean?

The word “diet” is derived from the Latin word “dieta,” which means “daily food allowance” and the Greek work “diaita,” which means “way of life regimen.” And “diet” is defined by Webster’s New World Dictionary (4th Ed., 2006) as “(1) what a person or animal usually eats and drinks, i.e. daily fare; or (2) a special or limited selection of food and drink chosen or prescribed to promote health or a gain or loss of weight.”

Why “Fad” Diets Don’t Work

Unfortunately, most “diets” and many weight loss programs are of the “fad” type and this is where all the problems begin for people that set their mind on following a diet. Fad diets are idiosyncratic with eating patterns that are designed to promote short term weight loss. Because of this, the end result is usually dissatisfaction, since all the weight that is lost by following the initial fad diet tends to be regained — plus some more!

Over the years, many fad diets have been popular at one time or another. Some of these popular fad diets have included the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, Nutrisystem, South Beach Diet, Sugar Busters, Cambridge, Slim-Fast, Pritkin, Zone, Paleo, and even Raw Food (only).

With the proliferation of television doctors and the internet, other fad diets have also become popular in recent years. The slick advertising and marketing of these weight loss diets further promote the idea that they are the answer to the weight loss crisis. More often than not, however, they can lead to other health problems.

Blood Type Diet

The Blood Type Diet, developed by Peter J. D’Adamo, makes recommendations for the types of foods you should eat based solely upon your blood type. However, these recommendations could be harmful for people with certain underlying conditions that require them to eat a certain way. For instance, a person with diabetes that is one blood type may be told to eat high protein, while another with diabetes that has a different blood type may be told to avoid certain foods. These restrictive eating methods could conflict with their diabetes treatment plan. There are no proven long-term benefits to this way of eating and many deficiencies can result from the restrictions of this diet.

Cookie Diet

With the Cookie Diet the dieter is allowed five cookies, as a meal replacement for breakfast and lunch, and then a lean protein and veggies for dinner. Thus they take in a total of about 1500 calories a day. This is a very restrictive and unhealthy approach to dieting and it cannot be sustained long term.

Master Cleanse

When doing the Master Cleanse, or Detox Diet, you are following a detoxifying approach to weight loss, however this is not appropriate for long-term use at all. These cleansing diets often include the use of lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for cleansing. The type of diet lacks protein, fatty acids, and other essential nutrients and depends entirely on carbohydrates for calories.

HCG Diet

HCG, which is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, is a pregnancy hormone that can cause headache, fatigue, irritability, and male breast growth, among other abnormalities. But the HCG diet has been popular for many years. Its claim is that you can lose weight fast, at a rate of up to one to two pounds per day, and you aren’t supposed to feel hungry in the process. However, the FDA has called this diet dangerous, illegal, and fraudulent. There is actually very little scientific evidence that it is good for healthy weight loss and control and it is a risky diet to follow.

The Common Denominator of “Fad” Diets

The biggest common denominator of “fad” diets is that they provide and imbalance in your body. By being incredibly restrictive, these imbalances can lead to cravings which lead to excessive eating and, of course, weight gain.

Inevitably, those who jump from fad diet to fad diet fall into a cycle of what is known as “yo-yo dieting.” Yo-yo dieting refers to on-again, off-again attempts at losing weight. While restrictions can temporarily lead to weight reduction in many people, once someone resumes their usual pattern of eating, the weight that was lost is regained. Oftentimes even more weight is added on, leading to serious health risks for the unsuspecting.

Why Yo-Yo Dieting is Dangerous

Many studies have shown that yo-yo dieting leads to changes in your body that make it more difficult to lose weight over time. Not only does it lead to higher body fat percentages, but it can also lead to muscle loss, fatty liver, and an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Losing and gaining weight repeatedly can cause:

Reduction in Body Metabolism

With very few calories, the body reverts to a “starvation mode” in order to conserve its energy and stores. Glandular function, especially thyroid and adrenal, is adversely affected and this can become a permanent problem.

Depression

Because of the fluctuations in energy stores, this type of dieting can cause irritability, loss of motivation, and lack of energy. People with depression, or a tendency for it, can often find that yo-yo dieting puts them in serious danger of a downward spiral of depression.

Weight Gain

Hormones are disrupted with this type of dieting, as glands are not properly nourished to synthesize these vital chemicals in the body. The result is a slower rate of calorie expenditure, increased fat storage, and weight gain.

Reduced Immune Function

When cycling through weight loss and weight gain, natural defending cells are reduced which may cause infection and lead to rising cancer rates. Too many drastic “ups and downs” could weaken your immune system. This makes fad dieting a very risky practice.

Reduced Heart Function

Yo-yo dieting can cause plaque build-up which is aggravated by weight fluctuations. With blood pressure and cholesterol also being prone to more elevations, this means more risk to the dieter. It may also increase women’s risk for heart disease, according to preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention | Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions 2019, a premier global exchange of the latest advances in population-based cardiovascular science for researchers and clinicians.

The Answer for Proper Body Weight and Health

So, with all this talk about how “fad diets” don’t work, what do we need to do in order to maintain a proper body weight and enjoy increased health benefits? The answer lies in our ability to make better choices for ourselves when it comes to what we put in our body.

Make Better Choices

It all starts with learning to make better choices for your health. Choose to walk past the donut shop without stopping in for a quick snack. Choose to exercise everyday instead of sitting on the couch watching the latest episode of a TV show everyone is raving about.

Choose Quality Foods

When it comes to choosing what to put in your body, choose quality, preferably organic or home-grown, foods that you can rely on for their nutrient contents. Skip the fast food and processed and packaged foods.

vegetable skewers on a plate

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Skipping breakfast will never help you! Often those who avoid eating breakfast find themselves eating non-stop for the rest of the day. Eat nuts, berries, veggies, naturally caffeine-free coffee or tea, or a fresh squeezed or prepared veggie or fruit drink to start your day right.

Watch Your Portion Sizes

Making sure that you are eating the proper amount of food. This should not be ignored! Be sure to look at your food labels (or check on the internet) to find out the serving size of the food you plan to eat. For individuals that are actively exercising or engaged in athletic activity, those serving sizes can be adjusted based on the amount of activity you do. But you should be familiar with the recommended serving sizes of foods.

Eating Lunch Matters

Just like with breakfast, it’s never a good idea to skip your mid-day lunch. Keep your lunch high in quality veggies, protein, and fat, while keeping the bread and flour products to a minimum. Flour-based foods will make you gain weight very easily. Avocados, olive oil, fish, grass-fed and antibiotic-free lean meats, seaweeds, nuts of all kinds, fermented soy (tempeh), and quality whole grains, such as rice, millet, quinoa, spelt, and oats, make for a nutritious lunch that can sustain you until dinner time.

Keep Dinner Light

Your dinner should be light and supply good protein and fat in order for you to have a restful night. Don’t eat right before bedtime unless you have no choice due to a schedule issue or emergency. It’s better to give your dinner some time to settle before you call it a night.

Don’t Cut Out All Fats

We all need high quality fats in our food intake. We can get these from nuts, seeds, whole grains, olives, avocados, coconuts, fish, and meats. When you avoid fats you can’t attain proper health. While fats from low quality junk foods and snacks should be avoided, you do need small amounts of the good fats every day.

Control Your Chocolate Intake

Ahhh… chocolate – such a delightful treat! But, there really is no reason to be eating chocolate on a regular basis. A stamp-sized piece of unsweetened quality dark chocolate once in a while is okay for antioxidant purposes. But anything more should be avoided if your goal is proper health and weight control. While many claim to be “addicted” to chocolate, if you stop eating it, start eating right and start exercising the desire for chocolate will go away over time.

Did you know that exercise improves your immune system when you do it right? Ten minutes of high-energy workouts three times a day is the way to go for the best benefits.

I Just Can’t Seem To Lose Weight

Many people struggle with the thought that they just can’t seem to lose weight, no matter what weight loss program they try. That’s usually because they are in a “diet” frame of mind in a culture that is causing them to gain more weight. This is the crux of the problem. We must lose the idea of a “diet” to make long-term weight loss work.

When people are constantly “dieting” they are doing things to their body that silently sabotage their intended goals. Cutting calories drastically slows down metabolism and leads to overconsumption. It can also lead to a low functioning thyroid, a gland in your neck that controls your ability to burn calories. Dieters also find themselves not getting enough protein, which we need to function and keep weight intact.

Even if we are not specifically “on a diet,” we often make poor choices in the types of foods we put in our bodies. Poor quality fats, such as those found in fast foods and most junk snack foods are simply not good for us.

Gluten-containing and flour products can wreak havoc on the body. You must pay attention to foods containing wheat, rye, and barley, and use caution with breads, pasts, crusts, coating, cereals, breaded items, croutons, coatings, and condiments. And, above all, stay away from white bread and flour. White bread is made of a fragmented, highly processed wheat that has been drained of its nutrients, bleached, and mixed with paltry amounts of vitamins. It is terrible for your body!

Yo-yo dieting and fad diets play with our minds and bodies. Stop and plan your course sensibly for a healthier life, with less body weight to burden you as you live it.

Other Issues That Cause Weight Gain or Issues Losing Weight

While proper food and exercise are essential to maintaining proper weight and health, there can be other sources of weight gain problems that are often overlooked.

Prescription Drugs

Many prescription drugs can cause weight gain, such as antidepressants, beta blocks, anti-seizure medications, oral contraceptives and other hormone replacements, steroids, and diabetes meds. While many people must resort to these medications to deal with chronic issues, they need to pay attention. Be aware and do the best you can to ensure your lifestyle helps make it easier to control the weight.

Poor Quality Sleep

Good quality sleep is needed to help maintain proper weight and health. Leptin is a substance that is produced by the body during sleep and it plays a big role in weight control. Work to get your sleep right with natural methods and only medicate for sleep when necessary and under a doctor’s guidance. The lack of daily exercise is often one of the biggest reasons for poor sleep patterns.

woman sleeping

Underactive Thyroid

Your thyroid gland must work properly to have optimal health. Iodine sources should be known and used daily. Good sources include fish, seaweed, pure sea salt with iodine, or an iodine supplement, especially if you take a thyroid replacement. Be sure to have your iodine levels checked regularly.

Polycystic Ovarian Disease

Women with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (POD) have a condition that causes major imbalances in the body. It’s important to check with your doctor if you have been gaining a lot of weight since adolescence, have excessive body hair, or irregular menstrual periods to be sure you don’t have POD.

Incorrect Assumptions About Your Exercise Program

Oftentimes people are fooled by slick marketing tactics. Many ads claim that by using their expensive exercise machines, you are expending more calories than you are in reality. When determining how many calories you expend, you have to factor in your sex, age, body structure, and weight. If your treadmill, elliptical, or total gym is giving you a readout of calories expended when you are using it, you can be assured that reading is generally inaccurate and misleading. It’s always better to consult with a trainer and educate yourself on the real numbers when it comes to burning off calories.

Relying On Food Label Accuracy

Diet, low calorie, sugar-free, and low-fat food labels are misleading and dangerous. Artificial sweeteners, low or no fat food items, and other chemicals can be very harsh on the body’s hormonal and glandular systems. These are not real foods at all, so they have no place in your nutrition program. So many people are seduced, enticed, and excited when they see these labels. Don’t fall for it.

Not Accounting for Alcohol Intake

Alcohol has a lot of negative effects on the body. It is also high in calories! Many people forget to account for their alcohol intake when embarking on a weight loss goal.

Drinking Your Calories

Another thing people tend to forget is the amount of sugar and calories in other things they drink such as sodas, sweet teas, vitamin waters, and juices. These are huge sources of calories, leading to weight gain. Opt to drink plain water and squeeze a bit of lemon into it for taste, or infuse it with some other good fruits. Try unsweetened hot tea with or without lemon, coconut water (plain), or small portions of a fruit-flavored beverage. Or squeeze or juice fresh fruits or veggies, or a combination of both, to quench your thirst.

Wake Up and Start Living Right!

As we embark on a new year, it’s time to remember the old saying — garbage in, garbage out. Remember that what you put into your body is what you get out of it.

Garbage in. Garbage out.

You can’t be healthy and have a normal sustainable body weight if your lifestyle is one that consists of nothing to your advantage. Follow this simple philosophy:

  • Eat right because you care.
  • Sleep when you should.
  • Exercise often to maximize your health.
  • And, of course, stop the fad “diets.”

Be conscious of your choices now and live a longer, happier, healthier life.
